#BookReview ; She Ekla Cholo Re by Dr Shayan Haq & Santosh Avvannavar

Set in the backdrop of 1990 Calcutta, She is a story about finding one’s own identity in spite of all odds. The story spins around the life of Kusum, a brave heart whose identity is often untitled and blurred; it does not belong anywhere, definitely not under the ‘he’ or ‘she’ bracket, thanks to our social conditioning. Will she be successful in her mission? Find out in She, an utterly absorbing read that derives inspiration from Tagore’s “Ekla Cholo Re” song, which urges everyone to move on despite the fear of abandonment from others.

She Ekla Cholo Re by Dr Shyan Haq & Santosh Avvannavar has the tagline ‘A story meant to motivate all & sundry irrespective of their circumstances!’ as it says it is truly a beautiful story which can surely turn lives of many people who seek motivation in their lives & I really regret of not reading it sooner.

The story starts with an introduction to ‘SHE’ , how as a society we are unable to be acceptable towards ‘different’ people just because they’re not alike the majority of population & as a solution the “society” just chooses to be ignorant towards them & deny their existence all together & also treat them as taboo.

The plot consists of two main characters, Dr Rajendra Mukherjee & S. Kusum Chatterjee & their sudden encounter which gradually lead to a conversation about Kusum’s life, her struggle to act as a male when she was young & then more difficult situations arose when she finally accepted who she was.  This story is a portrayal of all the lone voices in our country in fact in the whole world who don’t find themselves to fit in general gender norms. Also I loved how the authors used Rabindranath Tagore’s song ‘Jodi Tor Dak Shune Keu Na Ase Tobe Ekla Cholo Re’ which is an inspirational song itself. Also I would like to thank Santosh Avvannavar & Amrita Foundation for including my name the reviewer’s list that too in this gem of a book.  You CAN’T risk to miss this one!!
